The contest–open to third, fourth, and fifth grade classrooms in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland–asks students to submit original drawings or photos that show the beauty and nature of the Delaware Estuary.
Three classrooms won the first-place prize, which includes a trip to either the DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC) in Wilmington, DE, or the DuPont Nature Center in Milford, DE. The first place winners are:
- Lisa Stiles’ 4th grade classroom, Mannington Township School, NJ
- Nancy Taylor’s 3rd grade classroom, Oldmans Township School, NJ
- Alison Williams’ 4th grade classroom, Lower Alloways Creek, NJ
The second place prize went to Tina Windsor’s 5th grade classroom, Linden Hill Elementary School, DE. Each of her students received a copy of “Red Knot: A Shorebird’s Incredible Journey” by Nancy Willis.
Alison Williams’ and Lisa Stiles’ 4th grade classes visited the DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC). Thirty-four students had the opportunity to visit DEEC and participate in some of their programs such as the “Land & Water” and “Fantastic Fish” programs. Nineteen students from Nancy Taylor’s 3rd grade class visited the DuPont Nature Center on the Mispillion. This center has an observation deck offering an amazing view of the harbor and its wildlife.
